St Paul Minnesota Landscaping Project:
Bob and MaryAnn Tennyson more than doubled the amount of living space in their Eagan, Minnesota back yard with this makeover.
The Tennyson's backyard makeover opened up the property, giving them more patio space, a large grassy play area and sunny terraced gardens for vegetables and flowers.
"When they first came to me, they really only used the pool area," says designer Josh Koller. "The pool was surrounded by a privacy fence, which pretty much blocked off the rest of the property. They didn't like how claustrophobic the pool area was. The steep yard on both sides of the house was a problem. Rain would wash dirt and mud into the pool area, and it was difficult to get from the front yard to the back."
The Tennyson's makeover was completed in approximately three weeks. Future plans include plantings for the sides of the house, a paver driveway, and night lighting.

Before: a steep slope from front to back prevented the Tennyson family from using their large and sunny back yard. First, the privacy fence surrounding the pool was removed. Then, the yard was regraded, creating two distinct areas: one for the pool and patio, and one for the lawn. |
| After: an elegant stone retaining wall of native Chilton limestone defines the pool and patio area which is surrounded by low-maintenance perennial beds and accented with potted annuals. |
| The Tennyson's enjoy dining poolside on their sunny flagstone patio. |
| The stone steps and terraces improve access from front to back and prevent erosion. The Tennyson's are adding a variety of sun-loving flowers and vegetables to the beds, based on suggestions from Josh.
