Minnesota Landscaping Project Backyard Landscape Design with Twin Ponds
This award-winning St Paul backyard landscape provides the enjoyment and respite of a northwoods retreat. The project began after the homeowner had a deck and screen porch built. She wanted a paver patio surrounded by brick planters, and two ponds connected by a stream. After the paver patio, ponds, and brick planters were in place, the homeowner's son added special touches flowers, bushes, stepping stones, and urns all in corresponding colors that enhanced the landscape design.
Outside, all the time. The homeowner wanted an outdoor living area that the family could use day and night in hot, cool or rainy weather. So she started by creating an 800 square foot concrete paver patio under the existing deck and porch.
When it's buggy, cool, windy or rainy the screened-in living and dining area is comfortable for entertaining or just relaxing. Coordinated outdoor furnishings and rugs add personality and comfort.
The shady, brick paver patio is a tranquil spot to unwind, even on hot summer days. The homeowner enjoys planting annuals in unusual containers.
Alongside the patio, biofalls gently draw water across two ponds. The effect at night is magical as the water gurgles and the landscape glows. The wood-stained mulch adds warmth and contrast against the cool-greens of the plants. Fish and plants help balance the pond eco-system, so maintenance is minimal.
The stream flows under a giant Chilton limestone. Family and friends enjoy sitting on the rocks along the natural footbridge and dangling their feet in the water.
The garden is full of surprises, with a swan planter, copper lighting fixtures, and decorative sculptures.
The homeowner created a flagstone patio, and added a free standing fireplace with bright red cushioned benches. The furnishings and potted annuals add a splash of color to the lawn and plants.
A sunny corner far from the house is just right for the first bright afternoons in spring.
The result. A relaxing outdoor living area.
